Livingston, New Jersey

Livingston is a historic town. Founded before the turn of the 18th century, settlers bought 14,000 acres from the Lenape tribe. Livingston’s population sits at nearly 30,000, and the township has seen considerable growth in the last 10 years. Livingston’s population is the perfect size for families. The town has a lot of green space as well for children and families.

Many people think of Livingston as a bedroom community for Newark and New York City. However, Livingston has more to offer than just a place to sleep. The town boasts an amazing arts community for a town of its size. Livingston has a community symphony orchestra that has been operating since the middle of the 20th century. There are also two community theater programs. One community theater is for adults, and the other is specifically for children. Founded in 2007, the Children’s Theatre showcases children in second through eighth grade. There is also a professional ballet company in Livingston, the home of the New Jersey School of Ballet. Clearly, the arts are an important part of the life of the town.

Visual arts are also important in Livingston. The Riker Hill Art Park has more than 40 studios where there are artists in residence. People can buy everything from pottery to paintings to jewelry at the art park. The area also sponsors artists and art classes for residents.

More than 25 percent of Livingston is green space. The town sponsors recreational programs for children and adults. Also, Riker Hill is a large park located within the city limits. Your kids can go and dig for fossils at the Riker Hill Park. The area has been a haven for dinosaur lovers since 1968.

Livingston Public Schools

The Livingston Public School District serves nearly 6,000 students. The student-teacher ratio in the Livingston School District is 13 to 1. The six elementary schools in the town of Livingston all have an A rating on Niche. Niche is a national aggregator ranking schools across the country based on factors, such as diversity and strength of staff. Niche rated two elementary schools in the district in the top 300 elementary schools in the nation. They are Harrison Elementary School and Riker Hill Elementary School.

There are two Livingston, N.J., middle schools: Mount Pleasant Middle School and Heritage Middle School. Niche rated them in the top 30 middle schools in New Jersey. Livingston High School is in the top 10 high schools in the state on the quality of its teachers. It is in the top 20 best high schools in the state as well. The high school offers many Advanced Placement courses for college credit. In fact, Niche gives the college prep coursework at the high school an A+. Many reviews on Niche state that the quality of the teachers and the curriculum helped with college preparation and enrollment.
