Chatham Downtown ClockChatham, located on the southern edge of Morris County just 25 miles from New York City and only 20 minutes from Newark International Airport, has many fine homes, townhouses, garden apartments, and condominiums. It has award winning schools and has been cited by Money Magazine and New Jersey Monthly as one of the “Best Places to Live.”

The Chathams, are the tale of two towns: Chatham Borough and Chatham Township. They share the same school district, post office (07928) and library, but are really two separate municipalities.

Chatham Borough Neighborhoods

Chatham Borough is approximately 2.5 square miles with a quaint, colonial village feel along downtown Main Street. With its wonderful restaurants, specialty shops and train station with an easy 40 minute ride to NYC on the Midtown Direct Morris Line. Many homes were built prior to the 1960’s on .15 to .33 acre lots and feature old world charm…you will find beautiful Victorian and Colonial homes from the early 1900’s. Don’t be surprised tho’, to find brand new high-end construction right next door as builders tear down the older homes, making way for these magnificent homes.

The various sections include: Washington, the Hill, the Manor and the Village.

Chatham Township Neighborhoods

Chatham Township is approximately 9.4 square miles and is located toward the South and West of the Borough. It has larger lots with the homes and neighborhoods built beginning in the 1950s. Builders have found made their mark in the Township as well with luxury properties over $1,750,000+.

There are many townhomes available including: Vernon Grove, Sutton Woods, Briar Woods, Heritage Green and the upscale Rosevale.

Some of the neighborhoods include: Wickham Woods, Lafayette, Dellwood, Highlands, Chatham Heights and Rolling Hill.

Chatham Borough residents are allowed to park at the Chatham Train Station. Although permit application waitlists are 1.5+ years long. The permits cost $350 per year for the lots next to the station on Fairmount Avenue and Railroad Plaza and along Bond Street and Fairmount Avenue.  Another option for residents is metered parking, for $5.00 per day…but if you are not there by 7am…forgetaboutit!!!  Most Borough residents walk to the train.

Chatham Township residents tend to park at the Summit train station, taking advantage of its ample parking spaces. For the Chatham Train Schedule, check times with NJ Transit.

Chatham High School

The Chatham School District is a regional public school district serving the students of Chatham Borough and Chatham Township for grades K through 12. There are 3 primary schools (K–3) Milton Avenue,  Southern Boulevard and Washington Avenue SchoolLafayette School is for grade 4 and 5.  Chatham Middle School serves grades 6–8 and Chatham High School serves students in grades 9–12.

Cultural Activities

Cultural opportunities include historical, art, garden and musical groups, as well as the facilities and programs of neighboring universities. The Library of the Chathams is a valuable resource to the residents. Chatham Township is a family community whose residents take pride in their green, forested land at the edge of the Great Swamp…my personal favorite for a 33 mile bicycle ride!!!
